Explosion levels home on Detroit’s east side

A house explodes on Detroit’s east side, killing a woman in her early 40s and injuring a 46-year-old man.

It happened just before 3:50 p.m. Saturday in the 19400 block of McCormick, near Moross and I-94.

Firefighters said the male victim, suffered burns to the upper half of his body, and was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms said firefighters were later informed that there was possibly another person inside the house during the explosion.

“At that time we immediately ordered excavation equipment to come out so we can start our search and rescue and unfortunately we did a find a deceased person in the house,” Simms said.

Firefighters believe there are no other victims.

Two neighboring homes were heavily damaged by the explosion.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, Simms said.
