Will Jones rejoined the Local 4 news team in February 2023 as a weekend evening anchor and weekday reporter. He previously worked as a general assignment reporter for the station from 2012 to 2015.
Will returns to Detroit from ABC 7 Chicago where he spent the first 5 of his 7 years at the station as a general assignment reporter. In 2021 he became the station’s first race and culture reporter. In this role, Will focused on amplifying underrepresented voices in the community.
While in Chicago, Will received multiple Chicago/Midwest Emmy awards, including in 2022 for a short documentary on a trans youth mentorship program. The documentary was also recognized by the Illinois Broadcasters Association.
During Will’s first stint in Detroit, he was honored with a Michigan Emmy award in 2015 for his special report on Freedom House Detroit, an organization that aids asylum-seekers. It was a personal story for Will as he spent several hours each week volunteering at Freedom House Detroit helping their clients learn English and adjust to life in the United States. He remains in contact with several of the nonprofit's former clients. Will considers them family.
Will has also worked on-air at television stations in Greenville, South Carolina and Charleston, West Virginia.
He is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Will was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a child, he spent many summers visiting family in Detroit.
In his free time, Will enjoys working out, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Will is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
He lives in Detroit with his wife and daughter.
