DETROIT – On Friday, swimmers, boaters, and volunteers will gather at Belle Isle to raise funds for cancer research at the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center.

Participants can choose from swim distances including a quarter-mile, half-mile, one-mile, or two-mile course. The organizers are looking for volunteers to help with safety on the water, registration, and distribution of T-shirts and towels.

Funds raised by the Motor City Mile benefit critical research areas such as immunotherapy, early detection technologies, and patient support, focusing on pancreatic, gastrointestinal, bladder, lung, and colorectal cancers.

The national Swim Across America organization generally awards more than 60 cancer research grants annually. Since its inception in 1987, the nonprofit has raised over $100 million. The Detroit event alone has contributed more than $500,000 over the past seven years.

Swimmers are required to pay a $100 entry fee, with a minimum fundraising target of $400 for adults and $200 for participants under 18.

Registration opens onsite at 7 a.m., with swimming starting at 8:45 a.m. on July 11. Participants may also register online through July 9.
