Livonia police handing out fines for driving golf carts on public roads

Police say violators will face $100 fines

LIVONIA, Mich. – Livonia residents who own a golf cart and are caught driving it on public roads – be ready to open your wallet.

The Livonia Police Department says its increasing enforcement of a state law that prohibits the use of golf cars on public roads and sidewalks.

The announcement was made on Facebook with the post reading, “while golf carts may seem like a convenient way to get around the neighborhood, they are not legal for use on Livonia’s streets or sidewalks. Our officers will take enforcement action against violations.”

The civil infraction carries a $100 fine, police said.

Golf carts are allowed on certain roads in some Michigan communities. But not Livonia.

A 2014 law allows local municipalities of 30,000 people or fewer to decide whether they want to allow golf carts on local roads. Livonia’s population is around 90,000.
