Nonprofit leads walk-a-thon to advance educational opportunities for girls

DSM International hosted ‘Justice for Girls Empowerment Weekend’

DETROIT – The Detroit riverfront transformed into a hub of global empowerment as people took steps to advance educational opportunities for young girls worldwide.

DSM International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting educational and health equity for girls, hosted its signature “Justice for Girls Empowerment Weekend” from July 10-12, 2025.

The three-day event culminated with the organization’s hallmark initiative, the “2 Million Steps for Girls Around the World” Walk-a-thon.

“It’s simply about raising scholarship funds, bringing people out to simply understand the power of taking care of their health and also the power of educating our brilliant girls,” says Dr. Donna Stallings, who leads DSM International.

The movement extends far beyond Detroit’s borders, with synchronized events happening in London, England; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and various cities throughout seven U.S. states.

The coordinated effort aimed to collect two million steps collectively, symbolizing the journey toward educational equity.

“We believe in equality and empowerment for girls. We believe in elevating girls from where they are to where they need to be,” explains Chaunci Cline of DSM International.

Impact Beyond Scholarships

The walk-a-thon has attracted participants of all ages, including young advocates like MacKenzie Singleton, 14.

“It makes me feel good because I know I can be an inspiration to other girls around the world,” she said.

Since its inception, DSM International has awarded over 30 scholarships to girls. However, participants emphasize that the impact extends beyond financial support. The initiative focuses on breaking cycles of poverty and unlocking girls’ full potential through education and mentorship.
