WARREN, Mich. – A 16-year-old juvenile is being detained after allegedly crashing a vehicle at a high rate of speed into another vehicle while fleeing from police.
Habib of Madison Heights was driving for Uber around 2:40 a.m. when he was struck by the teen fleeing Roseville police officers.
The 28-year-old man died from his injuries, leaving behind a 1-year-old daughter, a 3-month-old son, and his wife.
A Preliminary Hearing was scheduled to be held in the Macomb County Juvenile Court on Monday, July 14, 2025.
What happened
Roseville police issued a release on Monday, saying they tried to pull over a black Hyundai Sonata around 2:40 a.m. Saturday in the area of I-94 and Gratiot Avenue.
Officers said the Sonata had just been stolen from a neighborhood in a nearby city.
The teen driver didn’t stop, and police pursued him onto westbound I-696, then onto Hoover Road, and then onto 11 Mile Road.
Roseville police said the fleeing driver ignored a red light at the intersection of 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue.
The 16-year-old crashed into the Ford Fusion being driven by Habib, police said.
The Warren Police Department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the case.
The Roseville Police Department is doing an internal review of the chase.
Injuries
Police said they called paramedics and started to give aid to both drivers until they could be taken to the hospital, where Habib succumbed to his injuries.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family, our officers, and all who were involved in this tragic event,” Roseville police said in the release.
“This is a tragedy on many levels, and our sincere condolences are with the victim’s family and friends, and also with our officers, who, in tragic events such as these, take a toll on them,” the release says.
The 16-year-old Detroit boy who fled police was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where he was treated and released.
Charges expected
Investigators believe the 16-year-old is part of an “organized crew targeting the residents of Macomb County,” the release says.
Detectives are working with Macomb County prosecutors, and criminal charges “will be forthcoming,” Roseville police said.
The 16-year-old is currently being held at the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office’s request for a Special Adjournment to allow for a thorough review of the facts and circumstances was granted to decide if the interests of justice and protection of the public require the teen to be tried as an adult.
Bond was denied for the teen, who was ordered to remain in the Juvenile Justice Center pending the next preliminary hearing date set for July 18.
Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido is actively calling on Michigan lawmakers to come together in support of strong, bipartisan legislation to address the growing public safety threat of drivers who refuse to stop for law enforcement.
With a growing number of innocent lives lost to drivers fleeing law enforcement, the urgency is apparent.
The Michigan House is now taking up a bill that would impose stricter penalties on those who refuse to stop for police.
