DETROIT – The driver accused of crashing into a Detroit bus stop and killing an innocent couple appeared in court Tuesday for a preliminary examination.

2 killed when car crashes into Detroit bus stop

The crash happened around 6:45 p.m. April 25, 2025, on Evergreen Road near Fenkell Avenue on Detroit’s west side.

Dejah Latre Berry, 33, of Detroit, was heading south on Evergreen Road at a “high speed” when she lost control of her SUV, according to authorities.

Police said Berry crossed into the northbound lanes of Evergreen Road and struck Kwasi and Elizabeth Agbottah as they sat at a bus stop.

The SUV continued until it crashed into a gas station, police said.

“The vehicle struck both pedestrians, continued its travel into the BP gas station on the northeast corner of Fenkell and Evergreen, and struck another vehicle that was parked at the pump,” Detroit police Commander Ryan Connor said.

The Detroit couple were taken to a nearby hospital, where they died from their injuries.

Charges

Berry was charged with two counts of reckless driving causing death and two counts of driving with a suspended, revoked, or denied license causing death.

“I really do not know what else can be said about drivers driving like there are no rules of the road and thinking they can drive anyway they want to drive,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said after the crash. “That allegedly happened in this case, and now two innocent people at a bus stop are dead.”

Berry was given a $50,000 bond at her arraignment and ordered to wear a GPS tether.

Tuesday’s preliminary examination

Berry appeared virtually in the court room on Tuesday and waived her right to a preliminary examination.

She asked for an adjustment to her bond conditions that would allow her to go to work on Saturdays. Previously, she was only allowed to leave for work from Sundays through Wednesdays, but her defense attorney said she has had a new shift added on Saturdays.

Her next court date was also determined. She is scheduled to be arraigned on information at the Circuit Court at 9 a.m. July 29.
