MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – The Monroe Post Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers have seized $1.8 million in cocaine during a traffic stop.
The incident occurred on Tuesday (July 15) at 9:15 p.m. when CVED officers from the Monroe Post were working the northbound I-75 weigh station in French Township.
Police said a 2018 Kenworth truck tractor with a flatbed bypassed the scales and failed to stop.
Officials said a traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle a short time later
Police said they made contact with the driver, a 26-year-old man from Ontario, Canada.
Officials stated that the driver reported he was returning from Ohio after picking up a load and was en route to Canada.
Police stated that they obtained consent to search the vehicle and located four U-Haul cardboard boxes containing a total of 70 vacuum-sealed packages in the trailer storage compartment.
Officials said random packages tested positive for cocaine. The 26-year-old man denied any knowledge of the drugs.
Police said the driver was arrested and lodged at the Monroe County Jail on a charge of possession with intent to deliver cocaine, over 1,000 grams.
Officials said the cost for a kilo of cocaine can vary between $13,000-$26,000.
Police said the load would have a maximum street value of approximately $1,820,000.
CVED officers were assisted by Monroe City PD K-9, and the Monroe Area Narcotics Team and Investigative Services (M.A.N.T.I.S.).
