Detroit man charged after brother shot by 13-year-old neighbor

18-year-old expected to be OK

DETROIT – A 26-year-old Detroit man has been charged with a safe storage violation after a 13-year-old reportedly shot the man’s brother.

The shooting happened just before 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 14, at a home on Kercheval Street. According to authorities, Geris Edward Gordon’s 18-year-old brother and 13-year-old neighbor were inside Gordon’s home when they found his unsecured handgun.

Police believe the 13-year-old was handling the gun when it fired, hitting the 18-year-old in the wrist. The teen was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Gordon was charged Wednesday, July 16, with firearms – safe storage violations – premises under individual’s control – minor present and injured self or another. His bond was set at $25,000.

Gordon’s next court date is July 25.
