DETROIT – At least seven windows at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center were damaged early Friday.
No injuries were reported.
In addition to courtrooms, the building serves as the headquarters of the Detroit City Government and also houses officers for the Wayne County Government.
First Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald held a press conference outside the building Friday, July 18, regarding the shooting.
The shooting happened just before 5 a.m. Police said someone inside a gray sedan fired from the vehicle at the building before exiting on the Lodge Freeway. Six windows on the south side and one on the north side of a government building were damaged.
No one was inside the building at the time of the shooting.
Authorities believe the shooter used a pellet or BB gun, as no audio was recorded on surveillance cameras, no 911 calls were made, and no one in the area appeared to react to gunfire.
The damage was discovered by cleaning crews who arrived at 6 a.m.
“What stands out is the stupidity of it. They knew exactly where they were at,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s not funny. It’s not a game to us. We’re going to find you and we’re going to hold you accountable.”
