TAYLOR, Mich. – Alexis Kimber was at a loss for words, trying to make sense of the death of her 14-year-old son, Trey, who was shot dead on Saturday night in Taylor.
“I just wish, I just wish it could have been different,” Kimber said on Sunday (July 20). “His normal routine was walking to the mall every weekend, walking to the movie theater, and going to the movie theater. They took my life, my son’s life, away too soon.”
Trey was two weeks away from his 15th birthday on Aug. 2. Instead, his mother is planning a funeral for her only son.
“Trouble is everywhere, and it’s easy to get into, and my son ain’t no killer,” Kimber said. “He wasn’t like that.”
At some point, things went terribly wrong.
According to Taylor police, Trey got into an altercation with a group of teens behind the Meijer store near Eureka Road and Pine Street while walking back home.
During the fight, someone pulled a gun and shot him around 9 p.m.
He eventually ended up collapsing about 150 feet from his home. A makeshift memorial with candles and roses was started on the roadside where his body was found.
“It’s like, I’m out here in Taylor,” Kimber said. “Who would’ve thought they would have brought the drama to Taylor. We just got to stay on top of our kids.”
Trey had recently graduated from eighth grade at Grandport Academy and was set to start at Ecorse High School in the fall.
Grandport Academy Principal Shannon Jenkins described Trey as a “bright, kind, and spirited young person who touched the lives of many,” and called his death a profound loss to our school community.”
Kimber, feeling that loss, simply hopes for justice for her son.
“It’s all in God’s hands. Whether I get justice today or justice tomorrow, either way I go, it’s all in God’s hands. He’s in a better place. I’m a firm believer,” Kimber said.
Taylor police say they are currently investigating this shooting and have said they have descriptions of those involved.
Anyone with any information about Trey Kimber’s death is asked to contact the Taylor Police Department.
