DETROIT – A man accused of violently assaulting a Wayne State University student inside her campus apartment has been arrested and is now behind bars.
The assault took place late Saturday (July 19), causing concern among students and staff throughout the Wayne State community.
According to police, the incident happened around 11 p.m. at the Anthony Wayne Drive Apartments, located in the heart of the campus.
A student let an unknown man into her apartment after he claimed his toilet was clogged and he needed to use the bathroom.
Police say the suspect, who allegedly indicated he had a knife, lured the victim into the bathroom and threatened to sexually assault her.
During a struggle, the victim was reportedly choked and beaten.
Despite the violence, the woman was able to de-escalate the situation, causing the man to flee the scene.
Several students living in the apartment complex expressed shock and fear in the wake of the incident.
“It’s kind of scary. It makes me a little fearful, and a little bit more watching my back,” said student Rayana Henry.
Another student, Jade Skipper, expressed frustration, stating, “We have protocols for stuff like this, so it doesn’t happen. So, I’m more upset that it got to that point.”
In response to the assault, Wayne State University Police confirmed they are actively investigating the incident.
The university issued a statement on Monday emphasizing its commitment to ongoing education for students, faculty, and staff on crime prevention resources and personal safety best practices.
“The university will continue to educate our students, faculty, and staff on the many crime prevention resources we offer, as well as best practices for maintaining personal and campus safety.”

Student Kendall Susack said the incident is forcing tenants in the campus apartment building to be more vigilant.
“I’m just more watching when people come in. Because a lot of people, when you scan in, you see people you know, and they walk behind you. And it’s like, okay, I know you live here, but I’m going to shut this door behind me. You can scan your card and come in,” said Susack.
University administrators clarified that the arrested man has no ties to Wayne State University.
All students and staff have been officially notified about the assault, which has heightened awareness and caution on campus.
The incident serves as a stark reminder for the campus community to remain vigilant about personal safety and to utilize available resources to help maintain a secure environment for all.
