LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – One person was killed in a three-car crash on I-96 Wednesday morning, police said.
At about 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, troopers responded to I-96 at Kensington Road in Brighton Township after receiving a report of a traffic crash involving three vehicles.
A preliminary investigation revealed that a 19-year-old man from Detroit was traveling on westbound I-96 in a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu at a high rate of speed, estimated to exceed 100 mph, according to a release from Michigan State Police.
Witnesses told police that before the crash, the vehicle was in the right lane and then swerved into the middle and hit another vehicle.
Both of those vehicles lost control, and a third vehicle was struck. This caused the Malibu to overturn and hit a construction traffic trailer, according to state police.
The 19-year-old driver of the Malibu was pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the other drivers involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, and at this time, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors, according to police.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
“Westbound I-96 at Kensington Rd will be closed for an unknown amount of time as troopers have requested an Accident Investigator to the scene to assist with the investigation,” MSP said in the release.
The crash has caused a miles-long backup for drivers, which can be seen in the video below:
