3 dead in apparent murder-suicide involving family members on Detroit’s west side

Victims were pronounced dead at the scene

DETROIT – Detroit police are investigating a triple murder-suicide shooting between family members on the city’s west side.

The incident occurred on Tuesday (July 22) around 6 p.m. in the 20400 block of Pinehurst Street.

Detroit police Captain Marcus Thirlkill said officers from the 12th Precinct discovered the three victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the incident appears to stem from a family matter, as all three victims were related, and the investigation is ongoing.

“We are still looking into the motive for this incident, but we do believe that this is an isolated incident at this location,” said Thirlkill.

Officials said the victims include two men in their late 40s and mid-50s. The person believed responsible is a man in his late 20s, also related to the victims.

Police said they are investigating the case as a murder-suicide.

Detroit’s Homicide Task Force, which includes Detroit police and Michigan State Police, is leading the investigation.

“At some point in time, I’m sure we’ll be able to dive into the reason for this tragic incident, but at this time, our thoughts and prayers go out to this family,” Thirlkill said.

Police said they are still determining if other family members, such as spouses or siblings, were involved or present.

The neighborhood where the shooting occurred is described as a very good community.

Police said they have been speaking with neighbors and family members, who are heartbroken over the tragedy.

“The Detroit Police Department is going to be here in every way we can to support this family during this difficult time,” Thirlkill said.

Police said they will provide further information as the investigation progresses.
