DETROIT – Detroit’s Willis Show Bar is temporarily closing for the rest of the summer due to operational costs and a seasonal lull in business.
The cocktail bar, which is located at 4156 Third Street in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, announced the closure in a social media post on Wednesday.

“This wasn’t a choice we made lightly,” the bar said in the post. “However, given rising operational costs and the seasonal lull in business that hits Detroit each summer, it’s clear now is the time to pause, reset, and focus on much-needed improvements for this historic music venue and cocktail bar.”
The bar first opened in 1949 and hosted jazz acts until it closed in 1978.
In 2018, the iconic bar was reopened in its original Art Moderne style. The main stage is located behind the bar, and the venue features live music, DJs, comedy shows and more.
In the post, Willis Show Bar said it hopes to return with a “sustainable future.”
“Our hope is that we can return with a sustainable future — one that supports both the music and the community that have always been at the heart of this space," according to the post.
No details about when the bar plans to reopen were included in the post.
