1 hospitalized after shooting involving police in Oakland County

Person was trying to break into home and had handgun, police say

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – A person was hospitalized after a shooting involving police in Madison Heights Friday night.

The shooting happened at around 8:15 p.m. on July 25 in the 27000 block of Brettonwoods Street. According to police, officers responded to the area for a report of someone firing multiple gunshots in the neighborhood.

When police arrived, they found a person reportedly trying to break into a home on Brettonwoods Street. Police said the person was holding a handgun and was ordered multiple times to drop it.

The person then allegedly pointed the gun at officers, leading an officer to shoot the person multiple times.

Officers rendered aid to the person and took them to a local hospital. Police said the person is in critical condition.

Details on the person shot have not yet been released.

A .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol and shell casings were recovered at the scene.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

No one else was injured in the shooting, said police.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the shooting involving the officer. Madison Heights police are conducting a separate criminal investigation.
