DETROIT – As the race for the mayor’s office heats up, early voting got underway on Saturday.
Detroit launched early voting on July 26 with a lively event aimed at getting residents to the polls.
“I was so happy when I found out you could vote early,” said Noreen, one of the attendees.
Eugene shared why he was there, “It was important for me to be here today because I want to help start whatever new change we will be beginning.”
Early voting runs for nine days, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at eight centers covering every district in the city.
“People want to come to a party and engage in the community so we have lots of activities and resources here,” said Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey.
Winfrey also noted that 33,000 Detroiters have already voted absentee in this year’s mayoral race.
“Research the candidates but don’t close your mouth, vote! This election is important for Detroiters, it determines our quality of life,” she urged.
The primary election is set for Tuesday, Aug. 5, and momentum is building. Voters say housing and student safety are top concerns.
“It was nice to see what the community shared, it’s important to have that convo as I get ready to make my final decision,” Eugene said.
By Election Day, the city clerk’s office expects 55,000 Detroiters will have voted early.
Whether you come to a party or vote on Tuesday, make your voice heard.
