BERKLEY, Mich. – The Berkley Department of Public Safety has announced the retirement of K-9 Bear and the departure of his handler, Public Safety Officer Brian Anderson.
Berkley Department of Public Safety has said that K-9 Bear has been a beloved and trusted member of the department, contributing to public safety through his work in narcotics detection, suspect trafficking, and community engagement.

When Bear joined the department in 2018, the department says he quickly became more than a police K-9, serving as a familiar face at community events, school demonstrations, and neighborhood patrols. His presence was said to not only be effective in law enforcement operations but also in building lasting bonds with the Berkley community.
“Bear was more than just a partner -- he was part of our family,” said Public Safety Director Matt Koehn, “He brought strength to our operations and joy to our community. We are incredibly grateful to both him and Officer Aderson for their years of outstanding service.”
Anderson had served the city of Berkley for 11 years. the department says that officer Anderson demonstrated exemplary commitment and professionalism. they also state that he has been instrumental in the success of K-9 Bear while also playing a key role in the growth of the department’s K-9 program.
Officer Anderson had also been recognized with awards from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, four Life Saving Awards, two Distinguished service Awards, and a Unit Citation.
The department states that although it is difficult to say goodbye, they look to the future with optimism. They wish Officer Anderson the very best as he moves on to continue his career in law enforcement with another agency and hopes that K-9 Bear enjoys his well-deserved retirement.
