1 killed in shooting at Royal Oak apartment complex, police say

Suspect is in custody

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – One person was killed in a shooting that happened in the parking lot of a Royal Oak apartment complex on Thursday, police said.

At about noon on July 31, police responded to the Devon Park Apartments in the 3800 block of Crooks Road, which is located across the street from Royal Oak High School, after receiving a report of shots being fired.

According to police and witnesses, an argument that started inside an apartment continued into the parking lot.

A man was then shot multiple times in the parking lot and died from his injuries, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody shortly after the shooting happened.

Schools in the area that were holding summer programs were briefly locked down, but reopened at around 3 p.m.

Police say the scene is secure and there is no threat to the public. They are still investigating, but say this appeared to be a targeted shooting.

A police presence will be maintained at the apartment complex as the investigation continues.
