13-year-old stepbrothers shot on city’s east side

DETROIT – A 13-year-old was killed and another was injured in a shooting in Detroit on Friday night, police said.

The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. on Aug. 1 at East Lantz and Mitchell streets.

Three teens were out walking when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up next to them, according to Detroit Police Assistant Chief Franklin Hayes.

They exchanged words, and then shots were fired.

A 13-year-old boy was killed, and another 13-year-old boy was injured and taken to the hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the arm, according to police.

Hayes said the two teens who were shot were stepbrothers.

“As a parent myself of a 13-year-old, certainly our hearts go out to them, the Detroit Police Department, our city, our hearts go out to this family,” said Hayes.

Police say it is unclear if the victims knew the shooter at this point in the investigation.

Officers will interview the injured teen and canvass the area to collect more information about the shooting, but are urging the public to come forward with any details that they might have about the shooting.

This shooting comes amid a summer marked by violence involving children and teens.

On Thursday, a 7-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy were injured in a drive-by shooting while they were asleep in a home on the city’s east side.

The shooting also comes days after 6-year-old Rylee Love was hit and killed by a stray bullet during a shootout near his family’s east side home.

“This community is outraged, we are tired of this youth violence and again we are here today, where a 13-year-old was fatally shot here in our community,” said Hayes.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that advances the investigation.
