Hussein Afi Hassoun, 23, went missing in water on Sunday

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – The body of a Dearborn man has been recovered from Lake Erie, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Hussein Afi Hassoun, 23, went missing in the water on Sunday afternoon after he jumped into the lake from a boat near Sterling State Park.

On Tuesday, Aug. 12, while search efforts were underway in the area where Hassoun was last seen, a boater reported that they had found a body in the water at about 8:45 a.m.

Members of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division responded to that area and recovered Hassoun’s body.

Hassoun was transported to the shore and was turned over to the Lucas County Medical Examiner, officials said.

Frenchtown Township Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance, and the Monroe County Sheriff Victim Service Unit assisted at the scene.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said Hassoun and four other adults were in a 34-foot white Baja boat on Lake Erie near Sterling State Park in Frenchtown Township when they jumped from the boat to swim.

Hassoun began to struggle and went under the water, officials said.

The other people who were with Hassoun lost sight of him after he went under the water.

Officials say he was not wearing a life jacket.

An extensive search began Sunday night and resumed on Monday and Tuesday, until the man’s body was recovered.
