WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. – Police said the driver of a gravel hauler caused a crash on I-75, shutting down the freeway for more than five hours.
The crash happened around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, in the northbound lanes of I-75 near I-94 in Wayne County.
Michigan State Police said a 32-year-old man from Sebewaing, Michigan, was driving a gravel hauler with a double trailer. He couldn’t stop in a safe distance behind a car and rear-ended it, according to police.
“One of the leading causes of crashes in the Metro Detroit area is following too closely,” Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said. “Distance is even more important when driving a heavier commercial truck. We want to remind all drivers to leave enough room between their vehicle and the one in front of them.”
The collision caused the gravel hauler to hit the bridge abutment and roll over onto the embankment. The two trailers blocked all lanes except the left lane, and gravel spilled all over the roadway.
The car was trapped between the two trailers. The person driving that car was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution due to a bump on the head.
Crews from the Michigan Department of Transportation were called to inspect the bridge.
I-75 was shut down for cleanup until about 9 p.m. Tuesday, with drivers being diverted to both directions of I-94.
