DEARBORN, Mich. – Crews are working to repair three “significant” water main breaks in Dearborn on Monday.
The city’s Department of Public Works is asking residents to avoid the following three locations on Aug. 18 until service resumes:
- Cherry Hill Road and Outer Drive intersection
- Penn Street and McKinley Street intersection
- Warren Avenue and Kendal Street intersection
What residents need to do
The department advises that when water service resumes at home, do not use hot water until the water turns clear on the cold setting. Skipping this can cause serious damage to your hot water heater.
Here’s how residents can prepare to use water at home after a water main break, according to city officials:
- Turn off the cold water supply to your hot water heater or stop using it altogether.
- Turn the faucet/sink to cold at the lowest point of your residence (this point might be in your basement). You may need to remove the aerator (metal screen) from the mouth of your faucet when completing this step.
- The water may be brown or discolored at first. Continue to run the water until it turns completely clear.
Once the water is clear, residents can turn the hot water heater supply back on and begin using hot water as usual.
According to the Dearborn Department of Public Works, the water is safe for cooking, drinking, cleaning and bathing once it is clear.
