Aimed to improve recycling access, inspire more resident participation and enhance safety for sanitation workers. The new rolling- lidded recycling carts will increase the number of materials recycled in Madison Heights, the highest of all time, from 1,000 tons per year to 1,500 tons per year.
Over 10,300 properties in the city will receive 96-gallon Madison Heights branded trash carts and one 64-gallon Madison Heights-branded recycling cart as part of the rollout that begins on Monday. Carts will be provided by Cascade Cart Solutions, which is Michigan’s only trash/recycling carts manufacturer.
Madison Heights is spending $1.1 million to purchase the carts from Cascade with nearly half of the cost being covered by a $403,200 Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) Recycling Infrastructure grant with an additional $105,600 grant from the Recycling Partnership to support the rollout.
The city’s investment helps put Madison Heights on the map as among Michigan’s community recycling champions.
The new collection system will make it easier and faster for Madison Heights residents, especially seniors, to recycle. It’s estimated $200,000 in annual savings and approximately $1 million over the five-year collection contract with Clinton Township-based Priority Waste.
Materials that can be deposited into the recycling carts include:
