DETROIT – Residents at a senior apartment building on Detroit’s east side are coming together to speak out against the problems they’ve been experiencing.
Their answer was to create a union of residents to let management know: ‘Enough is enough.’
This union comprises residents of the River Pointe Tower Apartment building who have gathered to speak out against several major issues they’ve been dealing with.
“The first week I lived here, the closet door fell on my head. I had a huge gash and I had to get stitches,” said Charles Cunningham.
“Water was running down my walls. Mold was in my apartment. That ain’t right,” said Ronald Mays.
The group on site is presenting their demands to have several issues addressed and resolved.
In their corner, Councilwoman Latisha Johnson.
“Now for them to come together and work together to stand up against the property management and owner to make sure they understand their demands and addressing their problems; that is significant,” said Johnson.
One story that really stuck out was that of Ronald Mays.
“I’m embarrassed. I had bed bugs at one point and had to get rid of all my stuff. Now I’m just sitting up there on nothing and don’t want nothing. I don’t want my grandbaby to see me like that,” Ronald added.
But he’s worried about retaliation from Capital Reality, the company that owns the complex.
“The threats. If you talk too much - I’m probably putting myself in a position now - be talking too much, we gotta find a way to get him out of here,” Ronald worried.
At least Ronald won’t be alone.
“Now that I know somebody is into it with me - if they come at me, they’re gonna be coming at a group. Just hope people start respecting each other and doing the right thing towards one another,” Ronald concluded.
Local 4 has yet to hear back from management at Riverpointe Towers.
