DETROIT – The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) is closing its main building next week for major renovations and a redesigned Woodward Ave. facade of the historic Midtown building.
The museum is expected to close Monday, Aug. 25 until early 2026. During the closure, the museum will continue some programming in its Mike Kelley Homestead, the full-scale replica of the 1950s ranch-style homeland that the renowned artist Mike Kelley grew up in Westland.

MOCAD didn’t provide an opening date for the work to be completed other than early next year, according to a press statement.
Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the museum. The renovations will “focus on critical infrastructure upgrades, including HVAC improvements, and will feature a redesigned Woodward Avenue facade with a new public window display,” according to the press statement.
“This renovation is an investment in the museum’s future—one that will allow us to better serve artists, audiences, and the city of Detroit. As we look ahead, it’s just as important to reflect on our past as it is to imagine what’s possible," said Jova Lynne and Marie Madison-Patton, Co-Directors of MOCAD in a press release.
