Michigan school lunch programs remain in limbo -- Here’s why

School begins on Aug. 25 for many students across Metro Detroit, but there are concerns about the future of programs that feed the children.

That’s because districts rely on funding from Lansing, and state lawmakers are at an impasse.

At Woodhaven High School, there are concerns about who will be able to eat for free because the state budget programs that provide free school meals for all could be in jeopardy.

Building fire causes part of 8 Mile Road to close in Macomb County

A stretch of 8 Mile is closed early Monday morning as crews battle a building fire in Warren.

The fire happened just before 5 a.m. on Aug. 25 on 8 Mile between Ryan and Mound at what appears to be a vacant building.

Pokémon card craze: Empty shelves, long lines and hidden treasures

Long lines and empty shelves mark the current surge in demand for Pokémon cards, reaching an all-time high.

“No one could have seen this coming, you know. Now you have celebrities collecting, athletes, actors, everyone—you name it is collecting,” said Jonathan Franso, co-owner of Hidden Gems Card Shop in Shelby Township.

Sole survivor of Australian mushroom poisoning grieves loss of wife and friends

The sole survivor of a deadly lunch laced with toxic mushrooms said on Monday he felt only half alive following the death of his wife and he continued to grieve the loss of his two closest friends.

Ian Wilkinson read the first victim impact statement in at a sentencing hearing for Erin Patterson at the Victoria state Supreme Court. The 50-year-old will be sentenced on Sept. 8 on three counts of murder and one of attempted murder. The prosecution argued for a life sentence without possibility of parole, while defense lawyers want her to become eligible for release after serving 30 years.

Weather: Fall-like weather this week in Metro Detroit with possible showers

Cooler than average weather persists through much of the week. Kids will likely need an extra layer at the bus stop each morning. Increasing clouds today with highs around 70. There are scattered rain chances this afternoon, but not everyone will see the rain. Overnight lows dip to around 50 tonight with outlying suburbs in the 40s. For perspective, average overnight lows at the end of August across Metro Detroit are in the low 60s.
