Background: Argument over woman leads to deadly mass stabbing at Detroit pool party

Daiwan Lemane Hopson was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The charges stem from the deaths of 25-year-old Martisha Payne and 31-year-old Jakirea Williams, along with the non-fatal stabbings of two men.

Williams was reportedly hosting the party, which was intended as a gathering of family and friends. He was trying to break up a fight when he was killed.

It happened just before 10 p.m., Aug. 9, at a home near the intersection of Seven Mile Road and Fleming Street. Police believe Hopson pulled out a knife and stabbed one man multiple times during an argument in the backyard before stabbing three others in the front yard.

He was arrested less than a week later.

If convicted, he faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison.
