Video: Police chase ends with stolen car’s axle ripped off on I-96 in Livonia

3 arrested after high-speed pursuit

LIVONIA, Mich. – Dashcam footage shows the chaotic moment when a stolen car’s axle was ripped out during a police chase on I-96.

According to authorities, Michigan State Police troopers spotted a stolen car at about 7:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 28, and followed it west on I-96 it into Livonia. During the chase, Livonia police used a Grappler device to disable the vehicle.

The Grappler deployed a high-strength net around the stolen car’s rear axle, tethering it to the Livonia police cruiser. When the cruiser stopped, the stolen car stopped as well.

Dashboard camera footage captured the driver’s attempts to escape the Grappler by repeatedly reversing and driving forward. This struggle eventually ripped the axle completely from the car.

No one was injured.

The driver, a 27-year-old man from Brighton, and two women -- a 32-year-old from Wayne and a 31-year-old from Livonia -- were all taken into custody.
