DETROIT – A 47-year-old man from Wayne, charged with sexual assault, is facing more sexual assault charges.
Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios appeared in court Thursday, Sept. 4, and was arraigned on charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. He pleaded not guilty.
Figueroa-Berrios is accused of sexually assaulting a 41-year-old woman after forcing himself into a porta-potty on May 9 outside Grand Circus Park in Detroit.
These charges come after last month’s allegations that he assaulted a patient while working as a nurse at Detroit Sinai-Grace Hospital.
Prosecution said he faces four more sexual assault cases beyond the May allegations and that Figueroa-Berrios “preys on vulnerable patients” who seek help at the hospital.
The defense challenged the credibility of a key witness, saying the person was intoxicated at six times the legal limit and described many of Figueroa-Berrios’ patients as “drug addicts and people with mental illness.”
Before Thursday’s arraignment, Figueroa-Berrios was reportedly charged with five counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct in separate cases.
The court found him a danger to the community and set bond at $100,000. He is scheduled for a bond determination hearing Monday, Sept. 8, a probable cause hearing on Sept. 15 and a preliminary hearing on Sept. 22 to determine if there’s enough evidence to go to trial.
