ST. CLAIR COUNTY – St. Clair County officials are warning about a new scam targeting families after a loved one is booked into local jails.

Scammers are quickly finding contact numbers for relatives, calling them while posing as the sheriff’s office or jail staff, and pressuring them to send money immediately to secure a so‑called “release” on a tether.

According to the sheriff’s office, callers demand payment through digital methods — PayPal, Zelle, Apple Pay, and similar services — and set tight deadlines to create a sense of urgency.

In the most recent report, the caller used the phone number 810-734‑6447 and identified himself as “Sgt. Wise” from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office.

That interaction resulted in a victim losing nearly $1,000.

“It is disheartening that individuals stoop low enough to play on others’ misfortunes and take advantage of others in a stressful time,” Sheriff Mat King said. “Please, remain vigilant, and if you ever suspect something may be a scam, reach out to local authorities.”

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said it will never ask for payment via PayPal, Zelle, Apple Pay, or other digital transfer services for an inmate’s release.

If you get a suspicious call, hang up and verify by calling the sheriff’s office directly at 810‑987‑1700.
