DEARBORN, Mich. – A Dearborn police officer has been suspended without pay after being accused of dismissing a man who reported concerns about his safety. The resident was later allegedly intentionally hit by a car.
“After careful review, it was determined that the interaction did not reflect the standards of service that our community expects and deserves. The 40-year-old Dearborn man was hit by an SUV at about 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2025, as he was crossing Michigan Avenue near Howe Street.
When police arrived, they found the man unresponsive. The 40-year-old was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.
Before the attack, the man posted a video on social media of himself going into the Dearborn Police Department on Friday, claiming that someone was trying to kill him.
“The Dearborn Police Department is aware that, prior to this incident, the victim visited the police station to express concern for his safety and request an update on an alleged assault that occurred on August 21, 2025,” police said after the attack.
The suspect, Murtadha Jabbar Alizairij, 38, also of Dearborn, allegedly drove away before he went home and called 911 to report that he was the driver responsible for hitting the man.
Alizairij was arraigned on the charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, felonious assault and motor vehicle advisory. His bond was set at $750,000.
Police said the victim and Alizairij had known each other for over 20 years.
“The incident appears to have been a targeted act of intentional violence in response to a business dispute between Alizairij, the victim, and their family,” according to police.
During the arraignment, Alizairij’s defense attorney said that the victim used to work for Alizairij’s family, was let go from his position a few months ago, and had been making threats toward the family.
The defense attorney claimed that a lot led up to the assault, and he wanted the court to know that there are several videos of the victim threatening Alizairij and his family.
