Hamtramck names mayor Pro Tem after resignation, despite ongoing probe

With four of the five city council members present, Councilman Abu Musa was appointed Mayor Pro Tem

HAMTRAMCK, Mich.Hamtramck’s city council meeting on Tuesday night saw an official resignation and the appointment of a new mayor Pro Tem.

With four of the five city council members present, Councilman Abu Musa was appointed Mayor Pro Tem, as the former Mayor Pro Tem, Khalil Refai, had officially resigned.

The newly appointed mayor pro tem is the same man allegedly seen in surveillance video dropping off dozens of ballots during the recent primary election.

Musa is also under investigation for allegedly not living in Hamtramck and was named in the 2023 election fraud investigation, but was never charged.

The changes to the council come just days after the city manager and police chief were both terminated, marking a turbulent and controversial period for Hamtramck.

Council members also had the chance to address the public, asking residents to bear with the city as it transitions to better serve the community.

“Truth will come out very soon. Please be patient and pay attention. Speak what you know,” said Councilman Mohammed Hassan.

While Musa may be the new Mayor Pro Tem, remember that the election is just weeks away.
