General Motors facility in Warren closed after Legionnaires’ disease found among employees

Center will remain closed for testing

WARREN, Mich. – General Motors’ engineering center in Warren is closed after two workers tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease.

In a letter to employees shared with Local 4 on Thursday (Sept. 11), Macomb County informed General Motors of the positive tests late Wednesday.

And while the center has not been confirmed as the source, it will stay closed until at least Sept. 22 while tests are done.

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious lung infection spread through contaminated water systems in buildings.

Symptoms include cough, fever, headaches, muscle aches, and shortness of breath.

It can be treated with antibiotics, but about one in 10 people who get it die from complications.

“We are aware of two confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease at the GM Tech Center in Warren,” said Andrew Cox, Director/Health Officer of the Macomb County Health and Community Services.
