DETROIT – Wayne State University President Kimberly Espy has stepped down for “personal reasons” after two years in the role.
The university announced her departure on Thursday and said, “President Kimberly Andrews Espy announced today that for personal reasons she will step down from the university effective September 17, 2025.”
“Serving this institution has been an honor, and I am deeply proud of what we have accomplished together — from advancing student success and expanding research innovation to strengthening the community through collaboration,” Dr. Espy said. “With the remarkable students who inspired me every day, this decision was not a simple one, and I look forward to spending more time with my family. I am confident in the university’s continued momentum and further success for the future.”

This comes after the Board of Governors raised concerns about aspects of her management of the university.
“We thank Dr. Espy for her leadership and university achievements during her service,” Wayne State University Board Chair Shirley Stancato said in the announcement.
The announcement also comes as the Board is holding a special meeting on Wednesday evening to talk about a leadership transition.
