Man injured in shooting involving police on Detroit’s east side -- What we know

DETROIT – A man is critically injured after being shot multiple times by police officers late Thursday night on Detroit’s east side.

The shooting happened near Kelly and Moross roads just before 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 18.

Detroit police said members of the gang intelligence unit were conducting an investigation on the city’s east side when they saw a man in his mid-20s.

According to police, the man appeared to be armed, and when officers approached him, he ran away.

During the chase, the man allegedly dropped a gun. One officer opened fire when he went to pick up the gun, police said.

The man was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing.
