Metro Detroit residents will soon be required to dial 10 digits for phone calls.
Starting on Oct. 7, all local calls made within the 313 area code must be placed using 10 digits. This includes the area code and the seven-digit phone number.

If a call is made without the area code, it won’t be completed.
This comes as the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) prepares for the new 679 area code, as the 313 area code runs out of numbers.
In March, the MPSC launched a permissive dialing period, where callers in the 313 area code were asked to practice dialing 10 digits for their calls.
But beginning on Oct. 7, the 10-digit dialing will be required.
People currently with 313 area codes will not need to change their phone numbers.
Starting on Nov. 7, customers in Detroit and the surrounding suburbs may be assigned a number with the new area code if they ask for a new service or an additional line.
New customers will be assigned the 679 area when they run out of numbers with the 313 area code.
The MPSC expects the area code to be exhausted by the first quarter of 2028.
For long-distance calls, residents will continue to dial 1 plus the area code.
In addition, people can still dial three digits for 911, along with 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 and 811 if those are available in their community.
The agency also wants customers to ensure that automatic dialing equipment, applications and software are reprogrammed to dial 10 digits, including:
- Life-safety systems
- Fax machines
- Internet dial-up numbers
- Gates
- Speed dialers
- Mobile phone contact lists
- Call forward settings
- Voicemail services
Residents and local businesses are also reminded to ensure the area code is included on advertising materials, personal checks, pet ID tags and other items that include phone numbers.
