Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer makes statement on Grand Blanc church shooting

Multiple victims reported, shooter dead, church on fire, police say

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement Sunday on the shooting at a church in Grand Blanc Township.

Police confirmed that there are multiple victims, and the shooter is dead. When officers arrived, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was actively on fire.

The fire has since been contained, but everyone is asked to avoid the area.

“My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community,” Whitmer said in a social media post. “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly. We will continue to monitor this situation and hold the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc close.”

The call came in before 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025, from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road in Grand Blanc.

The pavilion to the north of the church has been chosen as a reunification site. Off-site reunification will be at the Trillium Theater at Holly and McCandlish roads, police said.
