GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police revealed some details about the man suspected of driving his vehicle into a church and shooting at least 10 people in Grand Blanc Township.

UPDATE: Everything we know so far about Grand Blanc Township church shooting

Grand Blanc Township police Chief William Renye said the suspected shooter was a 40-year-old man from Burton, Michigan.

The man drove his vehicle through the front doors of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road in Grand Blanc Township at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025, according to Renye.

He then started firing gunshots with an assault rifle, police said. At least 10 people were injured and taken to nearby hospitals, and two people have been pronounced dead.

The suspected shooter was confronted by a DNR officer and a Grand Blanc Township police officer. He was killed during an exchange of gunfire with those officers, according to Renye.

Police also believe the man deliberately set the church on fire. That fire was actively burning at the church when officers arrived, but it has since been extinguished, Renye said.

The plan is to serve search warrants at the man’s house. They are also going to go through his cellphone records, Renye said.

Right now, the motive for the attack is not clear.

For anyone who is there, the pavilion to the north has been chosen as a reunification site. Off-site reunification will be at the Trillium Theater at Holly and McCandlish roads, police said.

“My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community,” Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a social media post. “Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly. We will continue to monitor this situation and hold the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc close.”

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson posted a video on Facebook saying his department is working with federal, state, and local authorities.

“The entire church is on fire,” Swanson said. “We’re working with fire and all those things that happen during active shooter training. This is a dynamic scene.”

“I can’t actually believe that this would happen in my city,” resident Joe Ostrander said. “Nothing like this has ever even come close to happening here. It honestly -- I can’t even believe that it’s happened here.”
