GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Donna Short of Grand Blanc Township was at home on Sunday when she heard the police cars and sirens.
Though she did not know the victims personally, the tragedy that unfolded in her community compelled her to visit the scene.
“I just felt compelled today to come, pray, you know – just show my love as much as I can,” said Short.
With flowers in hand, Short approached the police barricade and left a small tribute for the four people who lost their lives.
One of the victims was the owner of Billmeier Camera Shop in Fenton’s father-in-law.
The shop owner shared a picture of him, saying they find solace knowing he did not suffer and that he is now with Jesus in heaven.
The impact on the community is palpable, with many feeling the hurt and sorrow from the tragedy.
Among the eight surviving victims, the ages range from six to 78 years old.
Five were shot, two remain in critical condition, and three suffered smoke inhalation.
Short’s thoughts are with all the survivors as she, along with many others, wrestles with the question of why this happened.
“There’s really no way of knowing why this happened, why he picked the church he did,” Short said. “I have forgiven him and I hope all the other Christians have forgiven him, and I hope all the other Christians will , him as well.”
