Eastpointe man arraigned after alleged attempt to stab officer during Walmart shoplifting arrest

Man’s bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety; If released, he must wear GPS tether

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Eastpointe man Joshua Mills, 32, was arraigned Tuesday on serious charges following an incident at a Sterling Heights Walmart.

According to Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido, Sterling Heights police responded Sunday, Oct. 5, 2025, to the Walmart on Van Dyke Avenue after Mills allegedly exited without paying for merchandise.

When the officers identified themselves, Mills took off running. An officer pursued and deployed a taser, striking Mills.

While Mills lay on his back, officers attempted to arrest him. Mills then quickly sat up and tried to stab an officer in the face with a screwdriver, narrowly missing.

After a struggle, Mills was taken into custody.

On Oct. 7, Mills was arraigned in the 41st District Court in Sterling Heights on multiple charges: one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, a 10-year felony; two counts of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing a police officer, each a two-year felony; and one count of second-degree retail fraud, a one-year misdemeanor.

Mills’ bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety. If released, Mills must wear a GPS tether.

Mills is scheduled for a probable cause conference on Monday, Oct. 20, and a preliminary exam on Monday, Oct. 27, both at 1 p.m. at the 41st District Court in Sterling Heights.
