MELVINDALE, Mich. – Melvindale officials have issued a boil water advisory after a drop in water pressure raised concerns about possible bacterial contamination in the city’s water supply.

The advisory came after a water shut-off on Oct. 8, 2025, caused a loss of pressure in the water distribution system.

While bacteria are common in the environment and generally not harmful, precautionary measures are necessary when water pressure drops for an extended period.

Residents are advised not to drink tap water without boiling it first.

Water should be brought to a boil for one minute, then cooled before use.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and preparing food.

The City of Melvindale is actively working to restore water pressure and is conducting remedial actions like flushing the system and collecting bacteria samples.

These tests will determine if the water meets state drinking water standards.

City officials expect to resolve the issue within 24 to 48 hours.

The boil water advisory will remain in effect until test results confirm the water is safe to drink.

For updates, residents should check melvindale.org or the City of Melvindale Facebook page for the latest updates on the situation.

“We thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we work to resolve this issue,” the city said in a statement.
