DETROIT – A mother and her child have been arrested after a student was stabbed at a Detroit school on Wednesday, the school district said.
The stabbing happened at Gompers Elementary-Middle School on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025.
A child stabbed another student after they were given a small knife by their mother in school, according to the school district.
“The metal detector sounded when the parent entered the school but the security guard failed to search the mother,” the school district said in a statement. “The security guard has been removed from the school pending an investigation that could lead to termination.”
The student and the mother have been arrested, according to the school district.
In a social media post, the victim’s mother said her daughter was stabbed in her head, back, and arm, and was cut from neck to ear.
The victim’s mother told Local 4 that the stabbing happened after another altercation that took place on Monday.
She also said that her daughter has now been released from the hospital, but will have a long road to recovery.
Classes at the school have been canceled for Thursday, Oct. 9.
“School will be cancelled tomorrow to ensure safety protocols are in place at the school,” the district said in the statement. “A Gompers family meeting will be held tomorrow to address this matter.”
The school district also said they are unaware of any other threats targeting students.
No other details have been released at this time.
