Plans for Sheetz gas station in Livonia voted down -- again

Council previously voted 5-2 in January to reject plans for a 24-hour station at 8 Mile Road and Newburgh Road

LIVONIA, Mich. – The debate over a controversial gas station in Livonia is far from over. Many on both sides gathered Monday evening to share their view to the city council.

Livonia city leaders, once again, turned down a proposal for a new Sheetz gas station.

The council previously voted 5-2 in January to reject plans for a 24-hour station at 8 Mile Road and Newburgh Road.

On Monday (Oct. 20), the property owner and developer appealed that decision.

The site, a former Rite Aid, has faced strong opposition from neighbors concerned about increased traffic, bright lights, and late-night noise.

Council members echoed those concerns and also raised potential environmental impacts related to the project.

A Sheetz spokesperson provided the following statement regarding the vote Monday night:

“We appreciate the thoughtful collaboration and input from the Livonia City Council and community members throughout this process. While we are disappointed by the decision on Monday night, we are pleased that our proposal fits within the city’s land use standards, and we remain committed to moving forward with our plans at this location.

“Sheetz looks forward to becoming part of the Livonia community, creating good-paying local jobs, investing in the neighborhood, and offering made-to-order food and fresh convenience options in a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. We are excited to bring these amenities to Livonia and to be a positive and engaged business partner from day one.”
