WDIV/Detroit News poll finds 75% of voters say they expect to be living in Detroit in 10 years

DETROIT – Detroit voters were asked during a recent poll if they see themselves staying in the city in 10 years.

Here’s the exact wording of the question, which was asked over the phone: Thinking ahead ten years, do you think you will still be living in Detroit, or do you think you will move and be living somewhere else?

Participants were then asked if they were to go somewhere else: Do you think you’ll be living in the Detroit suburbs, somewhere else in Michigan or do you think you will leave Michigan?

Here are the results:

  • Will live in Detroit -- 75.0%
  • Will move to the suburbs -- 3.0%
  • Will move somewhere else in Michigan -- 2.8%
  • Will move out of Michigan -- 8.7%
  • Will move, but not sure where -- 1.8%
  • Do not know -- 8.5%
  • Refused --0.2%

Poll methodology

WDIV and the Detroit News commissioned a survey of likely November 2025 general election voters within the city of Detroit. The poll was conducted by The Glengariff Group, Inc.

It was a 500-sample, live-operator telephone survey conducted from October 16-18, 2025.

The margin of error is +/- 4.4%, and there is a 95% level of confidence.

Of the respondents, 10.3% were called via landline telephone, and 89.7% were called on a cellphone.
