DETROIT – A woman is recovering after being shot during an altercation with Detroit police on Sunday.
Police said she led officers on a chase twice before she was shot. It started with a traffic stop at 3 p.m. on Oct. 26 and ended at the Detroit police facility on Sherwood Street.
An officer pulled over an SUV with an invalid license plate on Sunday, and police said the woman behind the wheel refused to provide her driver’s license, registration or get out of the car.
She then called 911, and more officers showed up at the scene. Police were able to get her out of the car, and pepper spray was used.
At Concorn and Outer Driver, police boxed her in. However, police said she continued driving toward officers, who fired multiple shots.
“That’s required if you’re going to operate on a Michigan road, and it’s also required that you don’t flee and elude, that’s a felony,” said Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison. “So, when you do that and you make that choice, you just went from a civil infraction to a felony.”
Bettison said this incident was an example of why the department is cracking down on traffic enforcement.
He also said he’s planning to soon release body cam video from the shooting.
