Cocktail bar in Midtown announces closure after 8-year run, plans for new leadership

DETROIT – A unique cocktail lounge in Midtown is closing, and new leadership is expected to take over.

Craft cocktail bar, Castalia announced on social media that it will close on New Year’s Eve and that “a new chapter will begin with a change in ownership and direction.”

The owners said is the social media post, “to be clear, we’re not out of money, we’re not out of ideas, we don’t have issues with our landlord, and our neighborhood is great. Rather, after a marvelous run of eight years, we are choosing to go out on top.”

The bar is owned by Kevin Peterson and his wife, Jane Larson, along with Kyle Dupree and Erica Kassel.

Castalia, known for its pairing of drinks and fragrances, gets its name from a fountain in Greek mythology where artists would go to find inspiration. It’s located on the lower level of a Victorian mansion at 3980 Second Ave., with space for about 20 guests.
