Macomb County man accused of trying to stab police officer’s face with screwdriver

Shoplifting escalates to violent arrest

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A 32-year-old man from Eastpointe has been bound over to circuit court after reportedly attempting to stab a police officer with a screwdriver.

It happened Oct. 5 at a Walmart store in Sterling Heights.

According to authorities, police responded to the store on reports of shoplifting. When they arrived, Joshua Mills reportedly ran off. An officer pursued and deployed a taser, striking Mills. While on his back as officers attempted to arrest him, Mills reportedly sat up and tried to stab an officer in the face with a screwdriver.

After a struggle, Mills was taken into custody. He was charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, two counts of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing a police officer and one count of second-degree retail fraud.

At his preliminary exam on Monday, Oct. 27, Mills reportedly waived his right to the exam and was bound over to circuit court. He will be arraigned on Nov. 10.

Mills remains lodged at the Macomb County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
