The Alger County Sheriff’s Office said they began investigating the case at about 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, after Starla’s family reported her missing.

Starla’s daughter, Steffanie Goings, and her husband, Anthony Owens, told NBC News that they live in Orlando, but would talk to Starla regularly.

They said they last spoke to Starla in the afternoon on Aug. 15, and she told them she was at a fair in Escanaba.

That’s the last time they heard from her.

The sheriff’s office said Starla’s car, an orange 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan, was found a “short distance” from her house on Peninsula Point Road in Munising Township on Aug. 17.

Since Starla disappeared, the sheriff’s office and other local agencies have “followed up on numerous tips and leads.”

“Starla’s disappearance is being treated as a missing persons case in which foul play could be a factor,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities have searched remote and wooded areas as part of their investigation, and Alger County Sheriff Todd Brock previously confirmed a search was conducted at Starla’s property on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2025.

“The investigation into Starla’s disappearance remains a high priority,” said Sheriff Brock. “We are working every day and are following all possible evidence and investigative leads. We want the public to know that we are doing everything we can to bring answers into her disappearance for her family and for our community.”

Starla is about 5′04″ tall, weighs 160 pounds, and has short white hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Alger County Sheriff’s Office at 906-387-7030.

Specifically, the sheriff’s office is looking for information from people who:

  • Observed an orange 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan between Aug. 15-17 in Munising Township and Au Train Township, particularly in the 16 Mile Lake/M-94 area
  • Has outdoor surveillance video or images (trail cameras, home surveillance cameras) near Peninsula Point Road, the 16 Mile Lake/M-94 area or any surrounding areas.
  • Saw unusual activity or vehicle movement in remote or wooded areas around Munising Township or Au Train Township from Aug. 15-17
