Hamtramck mayoral race: Why it’s too close to call, how a few rejected votes could change outcome

Voters whose ballots were rejected have 7 days to resubmit

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – The Hamtramck mayoral race remains undecided, with dozens of rejected ballots potentially impacting the outcome in what has become a razor-thin contest.

Adam Alharbi currently leads Muhith Mahmood by just 11 votes with all five precincts reporting, but city officials say the final results could change as voters have an opportunity to correct rejected ballots.

The clerk explained that some absentee ballots were rejected for various reasons, including missing signatures and signatures that didn’t match. The city has sent notification letters to affected voters with instructions on how to correct their ballots.

“We currently have dozens of those ballots that are waiting to be corrected,” said the Hamtramck City Clerk, Rana Faraj. “They’re putting the word out to the residents to get out there and correct those ballots so that they can be counted and sort of officiate the election.”

Voters whose ballots were rejected have seven days to resubmit their corrected ballots.

After that, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers needs to certify the election. That process takes about 30 days.

While one candidate has claimed victory on social media, city officials emphasize that no winner has been officially declared, and the final outcome remains uncertain pending the processing of corrected ballots.
